Derivative image

Also called derivatives and derived image. An image created from another image. The usual method for creating a derivative image is from a master image that is archived, usually in a lossless format such as TIFF or PSD. Images for websites, images for clients, and thumbnails are created from the master image. These new images are derivatives. They are often smaller and stored in a lossy format such as JPEG. To create a derivative image, an image manipulation program such as Photoshop is commonly used. See also lossless; master image; TIFF; PSD
