ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Color space

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

A color mapping function within a color model. Color models include RGB and CMYK, with RGB being the more common model in digital photography. The color mapping function describes how the color space is represented. A common representation is by a three-dimensional graph with the x, y, and z axes representing hue, saturation, and brightness. This is known as the HSB color space. In the case of an RGB color space, the x, y, and z axes would represent red, green, and blue, the RGB colors. Some examples of common color spaces include sRGB, Adobe RGB (1998), and ProPhoto RGB. There are software functions in programs such as Photoshop that allow one to convert images from one color space to another. See also HSB
