ONLINE GLOSSARY OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY

Codec

From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

A software program designed to encode and decode digital data, especially digital video. At one time, a codec was a hardwired encoder/decoder, but now it refers to specialized software. Digital data is processed through a codec to compress it before transmission; it is then uncompressed by another codec at the other end. Codec is sometimes said to be a contraction of compression and decompression.
