Calibration
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
The process of adjusting imaging equipment, such as cameras, scanners, monitors, and printers, to a standard that enables the image to look the same on all calibrated monitors and printers. Calibration needs to be done on a regular schedule, since equipment changes over time. When calibrating a monitor a calibration device called a puck is attached to the monitor screen and a software program is run to generate colors that are read by the puck. The software generates a profile that is applied to the monitor so that it will display in a standard way. A scanner can scan a standard color chart to accomplish the same thing. Calibration of other devices works in a similar manner.
