CIE LAB
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
A color space developed by the Centre Internationale D'eclairage (CIE). The actual name is CIE 1976 LAB. CIE LAB was designed to be a perceptibly linear space so that a change in color value would make a similar change in visual importance. It is also designed to mimic human color vision. The 'L*' stands for luminosity. One color axis is represented by a* and the other by b*. See CIE; LAB
