From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

A measure of storage in a computer or memory chip. A byte could also be described is a group of bits. By convention, a byte is now recognized as being made up of 8 bits. Since a bit can have two values (0 or 1), a byte that is made of 8 bits can have 28 values. That is, a byte can have values from 0 to 255, or a total of 256 different values, which is also 28. When prefixes are added, such as kilo, mega, and giga, the term is widely used in digital photography to measure the storage capability of hard drives and memory cards. See also kilobyte; megabyte (MB); gigabyte (GB)
