Binning
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
Combining the charges of several adjacent pixels. This is done to increase the sensitivity in low light situations. These combined pixels are represented by a single, larger pixel known as a super pixel. 1 x 1 binning uses the value from a single pixel. 2 x 2 binning combines the charges of four pixels located next to each other in a 2 x 2 array as a single super pixel. The resulting combination is four times more sensitive than the single pixel, but resolution is also cut in half. See also pixel; super pixel
