Basic input / output system (BIOS)

The software first run as a computer is booted up. Other software then takes over to accomplish the tasks desired. In the beginning, BIOS was stored in read-only memory. Later, BIOS was changed to firmware and stored in flash memory so it could be altered and updated as needed.
