From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

The process of making additional copies of images, or other data, in case one is accidentally destroyed or lost. Having one backup copy off-site helps to protect against a loss caused by a burglary, fire, or natural disaster. It is very important for photographers to back up all of their images. Digital images are actually very fragile and can be lost in a second. It is not a matter of if, but when, you will lose images. The files can be backed up on CDs, DVDs, another hard drive, or some combination of these media types. The backing-up process can be done manually or automatically. Having several backups is usually a good idea for peace of mind.
