From The Glossary of Digital Photography

Jump to: navigation, search

A function in a digital camera often used to automatically prevent overexposure by reducing the exposure. It is also used in digital video cameras to increase or decrease exposure automatically to keep the exposure within recordable boundaries. While it works in average conditions, it does not work well in special lighting situations such as back-lighting.
