American Standard Code for Information Interchange

A method created about forty years ago to convert or encode alphanumeric characters into numbers so that computers can use the characters. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), maintains the standard, so it is known as the ANSI binary-coding scheme. See also American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
