American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
A privately owned, nonprofit standards organization that has been in existence for nearly one hundred years. It sets voluntary standards, such as the old ASA film speed standards, which are used in the United States and other countries. As part of that function, they work with other organizations developing standards as well as government agencies, companies, and consumer groups. They also work with standards associations internationally to coordinate the development of international standards. Through their work, for example, the film speed standardsdeveloped by ASA were later incorporated into the ISO standards we have today. See ASA and ISO
