Alpha channel

A fourth channel added to the three channels in an RGB image. Along with the 8 bits of the image, the 8 bits of the alpha channel increases the total bits to 32. This alpha-channel data is used to represent masking information, effects, or multiple image composites. See also RGB; 32-bit color
