A variant of CMOS-based sensors in digital cameras. APS is less expensive than a CCD, uses much less power, and provides less image lag. It does suffer from higher fixed-pattern noise. It is steadily improving with regard to not only noise but also dynamic range and responsivity as well. Currently, camera cell phones are a primary user. See also CMOS
