AF assist
From The Glossary of Digital Photography
The illumination lamp used to assist the automatic focus process. (1) A visible light that flashes on for a moment in particularly dark situations. (2) An infrared lamp used instead of a visible lamp. The AF assist lamp is usually only effective over a relatively short distance. See also automatic focus
