8-bit color

Also called 256 colors, a color system in which each pixel is represented by 8 bits. This means that each pixel can be 256 (28) possible colors. For color images, this is a common bit depth using the GIF format in websites. This format is used mainly for graphic images in order to save storage space and to download more quickly. See also GIF
