8-bit color

Also called 256 colors, a color system in which each pixel is represented by 8 bits. This means that each pixel can be 256 (28) possible colors. For color images, this is a common bit depth using the GIF format in websites. This format is used mainly for graphic images in order to save storage space and to download more quickly.
